Weekend Sorted! 5 Free Family Outings in Vanagaram This Saturday
Is it just me, or do the weekends in Vanagaram seem to fly by before we’ve even decided what to do? If you’re tired of the usual mall rounds at VR or Forum and want to keep the kids entertained without draining your wallet, I’ve got you covered.
This Saturday, April 4th, there’s actually a lot happening right in our backyard. From hidden green spots to local community vibes, here are five ways to spend a "Zero-Rupee" family day.
1. Morning Walk & Play at Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Wetland Eco Park
If you haven't visited this spot yet, you're missing out on a local gem. Located just off Chettiyar Agaram Road, this park is surprisingly peaceful. It’s perfect for a Saturday morning "nature trail" with the kids.
Why it’s great: There’s a dedicated children’s play area that’s usually quite active on Saturday mornings.
Pro-Tip: Pack some home-made sandwiches and juice. There are plenty of benches where you can have a little family picnic while the kids burn off some energy on the slides.
2. Visit the Iconic Vanagaram Murugan Temple
Whether you’re religious or just looking for some cultural peace, a Saturday morning visit to the Murugan Temple on Meetpar Nagar is a staple for many of us. The architecture is beautiful, and the atmosphere on weekends is always vibrant.
Why it’s great: It’s a great way to introduce the kids to local traditions. Plus, the surrounding area usually has small local vendors—perfect for a quick window-shopping stroll afterward.
3. Exploring the "Bird Monument" (Mugambigai Nagar)
Just a short drive toward the Koyambedu side (Janakiraman Colony), the Bird Monument is a unique landmark that most people just drive past. Saturday is a great time to actually stop and take a look.
Why it’s great: It’s a fun, quick photo-op for the family. You can explain the local history to the kids and then head over to the nearby parks in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar for a quick run-around.
4. Window Shopping & AC Comfort at nearby Malls
Okay, we said free, and while the food court isn't free, the atmosphere is! If the April heat gets too much this Saturday, heading to a nearby hub like VR Mall or even the local stores along the Poonamallee High Road is a classic Chennai move.
The "Free" Hack: Check the mall atrium! Usually, on Saturdays, these places have free live music, small exhibitions, or brand pop-ups with games that the kids can participate in for free.
5. Saturday Evening at Porur Lake (The Check Dam View)
Just a 10-minute ride from the heart of Vanagaram, the area near the Adayar River Check Dam/Porur Lake is a great spot to catch the sunset.
Why it’s great: It’s one of the few open-air spots where you can actually feel a breeze. The view of the water as the sun goes down is the perfect way to end the day.
Note: Keep an eye on the kids near the water, and remember to carry your trash back with you to keep our local spots clean!
